"Combating Fraud in the Construction Industry"
Speakers: Jeremy Epstein, CPA, CFE, CAMS and Caitlin Poirier, J.D., CFE of Crowe LLP's Forensic Services practice
Fraud, embezzlement, and theft are common across the construction industry due to the nature of the work. Typical construction projects include a number of different moving parts and various participants. Fraud may be committed by a wide range of people, from business owners to employees, suppliers, or consultants, most of whom do not fit the typical criminal profile. The economic pressures in unsuccessful projects may lead to increased fraud, but successful projects and profitable relationships can also be equally susceptible.
The most common types of construction fraud include bid-rigging, billing for out-of-scope work, manipulating change orders, falsifying payment applications, and making false representations. The best way for companies to fortify their operations against such risks is to implement strong internal controls and continuous monitoring to assure their effectiveness. We will discuss innovative techniques for detecting fraud, through real-world case studies, and provide guidance when investigating alleged fraud.
